Hearing Audio Through Your TV’s Speaker and Headphones at the Same Time

Hearing Audio Through Your TV’s Speaker and Headphones at the Same Time

Hearing audio through the TV speaker AND the headphones at the same time

If you'd like to get sound on both your TV speakers AND headphones at the same time, it DEPENDS on whether the TV is able to support getting sound out to two sources simultaneously. It is NOT related to the transmitter. The transmitter receieves the sound from your TV's output and streams it over to your Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

For TV Built-In Speaker Users:

Solution 1: Change your TV's audio settings

First, check your TV’s settings to see if it supports simultaneous audio. Make sure that your TV’s audio output is set to “Internal TV Speaker + Audio Out (Optical)”. This setting’s name may vary depending on the TV’s brand and model.

If your TV doesn't have this setting, but you connect the transmitter to your TV via OPTICAL port AND you can see the following options under the SOUND OUTPUT settings on your TV...

You can actually get sound simultaneously! Follow these steps:

  1. Go to SOUND OUTPUT and change this to OPTICAL / EXTERNAL SPEAKER
  2. Once there's sound going out into the headphones, go back to SOUND OUTPUT and change this back to TV SPEAKER

If your TV doesn't support simultaneous output to both the TV speakers and headphones, here are some alternative methods you can consider:

If you use an audio transmitter:

Solution 2: Connect the Transmitter to a TV box / AV Receiver instead

If you have a TV box (DirecTV, Xfinity, Bluray Player, etc.), you should be able to find audio output ports on the back of them. Try to connect the Avantree transmitter directly here instead of the TV. This method essentially allows you to "go around" the TV's built-in speakers.

Con: will not work on streaming apps if you have a Smart TV or streaming device

For External Soundbar Users:

If the previous solutions don't work for you, you'll need to purchase a soundbar, stereo receiver, or external speakers to serve as your TV's speakers, since the TV's speakers won't work with your headphones. In this way, you can have audio coming from the headphones and these external speakers at the same time. Consider: Torpedo Plus

Solution 3: Use a Transmitter with the Passthrough Function

If you have a Soundbar or Stereo Receiver, check your transmitter to see if it supports passthrough. If not, you can return your current product and consider purchasing one of these: Orbit, Oasis Plus, Opera, Medley 6018, HT5009, HT5006, Duet, or Quartet.

Our industry leading "Passthrough" function allows you to put the transmitter/base between a TV and an external speaker and have audio come out from both devices AT THE SAME TIME.

Solution 4: Use an Audio splitter/extractor

  • For AUX Output - Use an audio splitter (e.g. Avantree TR302) to share the TV's audio between an EXTERNAL SPEAKER and the Transmitter. The splitter in this example is a 3.5mm audio splitter

  • For Optical AUDIO OUT - Use an optical splitter (e.g. J-Tech splitter) to share the TV's audio between an EXTERNAL SPEAKER and the Transmitter. The splitter in this example is an optical audio splitter.

  • For HDMI ARC OUT - Use an HDMI Audio Extractor (e.g. HAX05) to share the TV's audio between an EXTERNAL SPEAKER and the Transmitter. The splitter in this example is an ARC supported HDMI audio extractor.

Hi, I have an Oled c9 tv and am looking for a set of wireless, probably bluetooth, headphones for it. Ideally I would like them not to override the tv speakers. I also stream from my iPhone and would like them to work with that connection as well. Do you have a recommendation? Thanks. Ellen

Hi, whether the TV mutes its Speakers when you connect headphone/adapter to it depends on the TV itself, please contact your TV manufacturer to confirm. As for the iPhone thing... our adapters can't do it, but if you display the iPhone content on the TV, the TV will then be able to transmit the audio to the headphones :)

Can I adjust the volume on my Airpods with this system?

Yes but you'll have to use the volume buttons on the adapter since there's no Siri here.

Do you have a cable box or streaming stick plugged into your HDMI port? If you do, our HAX03 may work for you.

My father has hearing problems and needs the TV volume on the high side. The rest of us prefer it lower. With a new TV, an LG 55UN7300AUD and new headphones, Beats Studio3, we thought we'd be saving our hearing and my dad could enjoy watching the TV too. However, I can't figure out how to set up the TV so we can listen to the TV via the internal speakers and he can use his headphones via bluetooth. The option for internal speakers and bluetooth surround doesn't work- both use the same volume system! What can I do?

Hello. We recommend that you purchase a Bluetooth transmitter, plug it into the Digital Optical Audio out port on your TV, and connect the headphones to the transmitter. Your TV should be able to have audio come through both the headphones and the speakers that way. Just remember to delete the headphone from your TV's paired list.

Thanks for the info. Will this have independent volume control?
Avantree
December 22, 2020
The sound bar definitely does, but the headphone depends on the TV. Some TVs allow it some TVs don't, you'll have to check with the manufacturer and see if the TV allows independent volume adjustment when something's plugged into its audio output port. However, we've found that if you use the digital optical port on your TV, you're more likely to have that feature.

I have a similar question Petra GlaserDecember 15, 2020 at 2:06 AM But I need “wired” headphones (for my 90 year old mother) to work on my QLED Samsung 49” it has A small box that contains more components that sits separate from the TV, as a heads up, that’s where the optical digital audio out is if that helps ???? I’m also hoping she can control headphones with volume control on the wire and us hear the TV at a lower volume ???? Thank you for helping people ????

Hello, my recommendation is something like our Opera or Ensemble, plug it into the digital optical port. It should allow you to control volume independently.

My dad is 78 and need to use wired headphones. His short term memory not so good so wireless is too confusing. The problem that I am experiencing with his Vizio 39 Tesla is that the TV will not mute when the headphones are connected and he can only hear sound from one side of the headphones. It is connected through the red and white auxiliary cable. I don't think it's the port because when when we reversed the red and white aux cable the right side went silent and we could hear sound from the left side. So we thought we had a bad set of aux cables but the result was the same when we replaced it with a new set of red and white aux.

Hello, seems like you have two questions here... first part, usually if the TV doesn't mute when you plug something into the audio out, you can mute it via the remote control without affecting the headphones. Second part... have you tried a different pair of headphones? If the result's the same, maybe the red/white port is malfunctioning.

I received the Oasis Plus as a gift. We had to plug the optical cable to the cable box to make it work, as my Samsung Q60 R must not allow dual audio output. The Bose QC 35 headphones work as long as I am on cable, but they will not connect to TV when TV is receiving from local Antenna. Perhaps we have a setting on the TV incorrect while setting up the Oasis? I remember we set the digital to PCM. Prior to installing the Oasis Plus, my BOSE headset would not stay connected without unplugging my SONOS Beam, which attaches to the HDMI ARC port. The Beam does not have an optical port to install a splitter. Where do I go from here?
Avantree
January 5, 2021
Hi, since the Oasis is plugged into the cable box and the satellite is plugged into the TV directly, the Oasis can only receive audio from cable box. It's a problem if your sound bar doesn't have optical port... I would've suggested using the "bypass" feature but I guess you cant... Can you email support@avantree.com and address the email to Andrew so we can talk more about this?

Hello, when you plug it into the TV, please remember to go into your TV's audio settings menu and change the audio output format to PCM or Stereo. It should work then.

This is for my dad who's hard of hearing. LG 60UJ6050 TV. Vizio Surround Sound - S2121w-D0. Charter/Spectrum Cable. Sounds runs through soundbar. TV soundbar "0". Want to connect Apple Beats Wireless headphones so he can listen to tv at his sound and the rest of us not so loud. Where do I connect the wireless headphones - tv or surround sound? He watches cable, netflix, hulu, etc. We want him to adjust the sound to where he can hear the tv but not blast everyone out of the house. Suggestions, please?

Hello, you'll need our Oasis Plus adapter, and here's what you'll do: Take an optical cable, plug one end into your LG TV's optical out port, the other end into Oasis Plus' OPT input port. Take another optical cable, one end into Oasis Plus's OPT output port, the other end into your VIZIO surround sound's OPT input port.... and then you'll pair the Beats Bluetooth headphone to Oasis Plus. Everything will be able to work at the same time with independent volume control.

We have a Vizio E-231-B1 TV and the Oasis Plus transmits to the Torus speakers through 3.5mm jack, but we want to be able to use the Torus and the TV speakers at the same time instead of having to plug the jack in or out to use one or the other. TV connects through coaxial from remote receiver so can't set it up that way. The TV doesn't have an optical port, but does have RCA and HDMI. Would it work to use an adapter to change HDMI to one of the connection types that Oasis uses? Would this allow the tv speakers to function and also have volume controlled independently of the Torus speakers?

February 12, 2021
Hi, whether your TV can output audio through its speakers AND its audio output jack at the same time depends entirely on the TV... I looked up your TV and the headphone jack seems to be the only audio output port it has; the RCA port you mentioned is most likely Input only. There's no HDMI adapter for this purpose; the only solution I can give you is to purchase a sound bar that supports 3.5mm input... that way you can use Oasis Plus's "bypass" feature and have audio come through Torus AND the sound bar at the same time.

Trying to connect to a receiver without disabling dolby as I would like to have both speakers and headphones to work at same time. Can I connect the Oasis Plus to my receiver "B" channels line outs without damage?

You can take a look at our new product - Orbit, it supports Dolby so you won't have to switch it off. You can just do TV - OPT - Orbit - OPT - AV Receiver.

We have a Samsung Model Name UN55MU6290/UN55MU629D ^ series tv. My wife is hard of hearing and has to have the sound wide open. I would like to plug into the tv with your Oasis Plus then to a sound bar, then have a set of Bluetooth head phones ( adjustable ) to work at the same time , so she could hear the tv at the same time as the rest of the family. Will you draw me out a diagram as to connections and a list of what I need to buy. Thank you , in advance.

Hi Charles, looks like you already have a sound bar ready, so all you need to buy is our Opera - It's our newest Headphone + Transmitter model, it can do the same thing Oasis Plus does.

I have purchased Bluetooth Transmitter and Headphone set Model No. BTHT-4186. Connected to TV via Optical cable Pairing works fine, and audio HOWEVER, I am unable to adjust the volume UP using the headphone it can be lowered. On attempting to increase volume on the headset by pressing the + I get a load BEEP. There are NO volume adjustment on the transmitter, buttons are shown on other models. How do I adjut the volume independent of the volume adjustment on the TV....??

If you're using optical to connect the transmitter, the volume buttons on the headphone should work. If you're using analog connections, you'd want to use remote control to adjust volume.

I have a Denon AVR X2500H Receiver that I run my TV streaming and BR player through. I have hardwired external speakers through the receiver. Do you have a setup where I can run both hardwired speakers and a wireless earbuds (or headphones) at the same time?
Avantree
March 26, 2021
Yes, our Oasis Plus or Orbit should work. You'll have two setup options. Option 1: Move the Streaming device and BR player to your TV's HDMI input ports. And then you'll Connect the optical output port on your TV to the Oasis Plus (or Orbit)'s OPT input port. Take another Optical cable, connect Orbit's OPT output to your Denon's OPT input. Oasis Plus (and the headphones you connect to it) will work alongside your Denon. Option 2: Keep your current set up, connect the Oasis Plus to the OPT output port on your TV and connect headphones to Oasis Plus. However, I can't guarantee that this will work since not all TVs allow HDMI ARC and Optical to work at the same time.

Hi, if you get he Oasis Plus and put it in-between your TV and your Denon (and have headphones connected of course,) you'll have independent volume control. The volume on the headphones won't affect your Denon. Also, the Denon will still work even if you turn the Oasis Plus off.

Hi I have a tcl android tv and as my husband is hard of hearing I bought bluetooth headphones and was told he could listen to tv with headphones and I could also hear the tv. I can't get this to work,it's either tv or headphones, do you ave a solution to this please. TIA
Avantree
April 27, 2021
This feature actually depends on the TV itself. However, our products come with an adapter that's plugged into your TV's optical output port; we've found that when you use the optical port as audio output, you're more likely to get simultaneous audio through the headphones AND the speaker at the same time. On the other hand, if you have a sound bar or AVR connected, we have a different solution.

Hello. We have a Samsung TV, Yamaha sound bar, and recently purchased Sony headset. We purchased a Prozor 192KHz DAC audio converter and an optical cable splitter. We have success getting sound to the headphones and TV using TV Speakers and are able to adjust the TV volume to a comfortable level, but there are echos in the headsets. When connect the TV to AUDIO OUT/OPTICAL, we are unable to hear or adjust the volume through the sound bar, can only hear through the headphones. Can you help? What am I missing?
Avantree
May 24, 2021
Hi, you have a few different issues here, I'll answer them one by one. You're experiencing "echo" likely because the audio in the headphones and the TV are not synchronized, perhaps there's a little lag in your headphones. What Sony headphones are you using? As for the cant adjust through sound bar issue - Most TVs only allow one audio output channel at a time so you can't have audio through two different places at once. However, all your issues can be solved by our product... I'd specifically recommend Avantree Opera. Opera's "bypass" feature allows it to share the same audio output port with the sound bar you have (so you no longer need the splitter & DAC)... also allows audio to come through both the headphone AND the sound bar... all while letting you control volume independently on each. Does that make sense?
Andrew Jenkinson
May 27, 2021
I have a Bluetooth transmitter which supports 2 devices. Is it possible to adjust the lag on either or both so they are synchronised and I do not hear one slightly behind the other? Or is there a way to find a soundbar or speaker with the same lag as my headphones?
Avantree
May 27, 2021
When you connect two headphones, they should be more or less synchronized with each other especially if they're of the same model. The Bluetooth connection between the transmitter and each headphone will be identical no matter what. If you want everything to be synchronized with no lip-sync delay, you'll have to use headphones with low latency Bluetooth... such as our HT41899 or HT41866. (https://avantree.com/headphones/for-hearing-impaired) Also, there's currently no way to adjust latency on each headphone.

Sooo confusing! I bought your BTHT 5150 cause it said I could hook it up to my tv and get sound thru headset independent of tv. I have a Samsung smart tv, UN50JU6500. Thats all I know about it. I am going hard of hearing and the sound is off the charts on the tv and driving my spouse nuts! But the directions now say I need another device to hook it up?
Avantree
June 13, 2021
No you don't need another device. You can plug the HT5150 base into your TV's Digital Optical audio out port, it'll work that way. After you've connected it to your TV, go to your TV's audio settings menu, and follow the steps on this video (ignore the video title): https://youtu.be/JaquqPlq6Ic If anything, send us your contact info, our agents can call you and walk you through.
